22 July 2015 - Fans Forum

We are pleased to announce that a Fans' Forum will be held at 7pm on Thursday 6 August at the Den.

The club recently confirmed that our first team manager, Neil Harris, is available on this date, and the Forum is now finalised.

London Underground workers have now announced plans to hold a second strike, starting at 9.30pm on Wednesday, 5 August and lasting 24 hours, effectively meaning no service all day Thursday. Despite this, the plan is to continue with the Fans' Forum. The team has midweek fixtures in the following two weeks, making it difficult to find a suitable alternative date. Due to all the manager's commitments, the forum has to be booked well in advance and we cannot guarantee that a further strike will not be called on any rearranged date.

As we all know, the nearest station to the ground is South Bermondsey, one stop from London Bridge on a National Rail line, which is unaffected by the Underground strike; Surrey Quays is on the London Overground system, which is also unaffected; buses are similarly not involved in the strike action. The club car park will be open as usual for this event.

For these reasons, the intention is to proceed with the forum. Neil will be present for the first hour and, following a short break, chief executive Andy Ambler will answer questions from the audience. A full written review of the meeting will be available through the MSC website, with details also in the MSC pages of the matchday programme.

If you plan to attend, please advise the MSC by providing your name and membership number. Also, if you have any comments on these plans, you can contact the MSC through the usual channels: Telephone 07895 022325, email info@millwallsupportersclub.co.uk or write c/o Millwall FC, The Den, Zampa Road, London SE16 3LN.

17 June 2015 - Daniel Matthews

We all know Daniel's tragic story. The MSC have been approached by Daniel's cousin with the following:

"My cousin Daniel Matthews, was a loyal, young Millwall supporter who was passionate about every match and every score. He wouldn't have to say it as his face said it all. On 7 June Daniel was in a bad car crash and passed away; he was 19 and had his whole life ahead of him. As a life long supporter, our "Lion at Heart" deserves to have the best send off possible. Please help by donating anything you can by following this link."

16 June 2015 - MSC Football Team manager, Ian Toal, reflects

It is with an immensely heavy heart that I write this tribute to a remarkable young man who I had the pleasure of knowing. I have known Tommy for more than 10 years as his older brother Micky Blackmore, one of the mainstays in the Millwall Supporters Club team which I manage, brought him along to watch the matches.

Tommy was often there kicking the ball around on the sidelines. As time passed he would often ask when he could play in the team. Eventually, when he was a young teenager, Tommy got his first substitute appearance in one of our matches. The players rallied around him, winning the ball and giving it to him so he could show the skills he must have picked up from his older brother. You could see how much it meant to him to be playing for Millwall with his mates. But you could also see how much Tommy playing meant to the other players.

Tommy loved Millwall and especially playing for the MSC alongside his mates that he had known for years. And in return, his team-mates loved him. Like myself they had seen him grow up from a chid on the sidelines to be one of our great players.

Tommy also assisted me a fair bit in running the team. He would chase the other players up who hadn’t replied to me asking them about their availability. He also set up a Twitter account for the MSC football team asking opposition teams for matches.

This was Tommy all over. Always looking to get involved and helping others whenever he could. With my involvement in running the MSC team I've seen Tommy grow from a young boy into a lovely man, charming, polite, fiercely loyal and yet fun young man who was mature beyond his years. I’ve had so many people including MSC teammates from the years past and present express their shock and sadness to myself in the last few days about this tragedy. None of us can believe what has happened.

I shall miss Tommy forever as will many, many people. He was a remarkable young man, a real diamond who I had the pleasure of knowing and calling a friend.

RIP Tommy Blackmore

14 June 2015 - MSC Player Sponsorship 2015/16

As in previous years, the MSC will continue to sponsor one player for the forthcoming season and give the signed shirt and a VIP day out to a competition winner within our membership. Traditionally we have sponsored the manager, but with Neil Harris taking over he has a full compliment of sponsors already, so after liaison with the club, we have drawn up a shortlist of available players. Please click here to cast your vote as to who we should sponsor.

19 May 2015 - Sharon Evans

Sharon Evans was only 28 years old when she lost her battle with myeloid leukaemia in February this year. She was diagnosed with it in July, just two months after marrying her partner, Leigh. Sharon was mother to four daughters, Jodie (8), Libby (6), Nancy (5) and Rosalie (2).

Sharon began feeling ill and suffering painful mouth ulcers before her wedding on 4 May but put it down to stress - the devastating diagnosis came after her wisdom tooth became infected and she was sent to A & E. She got a call the next day asking her to go back in and there were people from Macmillan there. They explained that she hadleukaemia and she was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and underwent two successful rounds of chemotherapy.

Sharon and the family thought that she had beaten the illness, when just two days before Christmas when she was told the cancer had returned. Sharon was moved to Kings College Hospital on New Year's Eve and was told by doctors that chemotherapy was no longer working.

It had always been a big dream of Sharon's to see her girls in Disneyland, so family and friends set up a fundraising page to get her there with the girls and her husband, so they could build some good memories for the children.

Sharon was overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers, her friends and family.

Unfortunately Sharon was never well enough to make the trip, and spent most of the very short time she has left in hospital, and she died in February.

The family did not want to make another donation page, because they didn’t want people who had been kind enough to donate already, but the original page has expired, so this is the new one - gofundme.com/u9hbt9h5d.

Please help us to help this family. No donation is too small. Of course money will not bring their mother back, but it will make their lives a little easier and help their father to look after them.

20 April 2015 - Wolves Away - Update

Since the club made an announcement regarding ticketing arrangements for the last game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the MSC has been liaising with the club and the FOTB regarding the stipulation about membership and season ticket cards needing to be shown. After some pressure, the club went back to Wolves requesting more tickets. However, matters were became complicated when local police advised about intelligence suggesting the potential for disorder. As a result, whilst additional tickets have been provided, the original requirement of membership and season ticket cards being required remains in place.

10 April 2015 - Player of the Season Vote

As many of you will now be aware, the MSC has made the decision to not hold a player of the season vote for this campaign. This is not a decision that was taken lightly and there were long and intense conversations on the subject. The committee took into account the views of all the members that had put their opinions forward directly to committee members, none of which were in favour of holding the vote, together with views given by fans on messageboards, etc. We were also conscious of the consequences of this decision and the fact that this is the first time since the award was incepted that a vote has not been held, even in relegation seasons. However, the overwhelming opinion was that an award was not appropriate for this season. We’re as disappointed as everybody else that this situation came about and a decision was necessary, and look forward to the resumption of the vote next season.

23 March 2015 - Annual General Meeting of the Supporters’ Club

The MSC can confirm that the Annual General Meeting of the Supporters’ Club is scheduled for Wednesday 22 April. The meeting will be held at ‘Arry’s Bar at the Den and will start at 7.00 pm. It would be helpful if you could advise us in advance if you intend to attend. Please email your name and membership number or see one of the committee members at the Blue Bus before home games. Additionally, should you wish to stand for election the the MSC committee, please contact us prior to the deadline of 8 April with your name, membership number and a brief outline of why you would like to be elected. A member of the current committee will then contact you regarding the next steps.

The MSC constitution has not been reviewed for many years. In order to update and strengthen the constitution, a number of amendments are proposed. The existing constitution requires that the proposed amendments are publicised at least fourteen days prior to the AGM; the proposed changes can be seen below.

2. OBJECTIVES

2.1 To improve communication between Millwall FC (MFC) and its supporters, represent the views of its membership and encourage and assist MFC to take proper account of the interests of its members.

2.3 To organise the election of a suitable member of the MSC to be the supporter director on the board of the football club.

3. MEMBERSHIP

3.1Membership to MSC is gained automatically when a supporter either becomes a member or season ticket holder of Millwall Football Club.

3.3 All MSC members are entitled to stand for election to serve on the MSC committee, providing they give 14 days' notice ahead of the AGM of their intention to stand. Notice of intention to stand should be made to the current serving committee in writing by post or via e-mail. Candidates may be asked and expected to attend a meeting with members of the existing committee to discuss the candidacy.

3.4 Candidates for the role of supporter director must be active MSC committee members, with a minimum of twelve months' continuous service, a satisfactory attendance and performance record, and not subject to any MFC restrictions, at the time the election is called. The candidate must follow the election procedure; meet the laid down criteria for the role; and be supported by a proposer and three seconders, all of whom must be active MSC members and not subject to any MFC restrictions.

4. THE MSC COMMITTEE

4.1 The MSC committee shall be made up of no less than four and no more than thirteen MSC members.

4.2 On an annual basis, and at the AGM, either four or one third (whichever is the lower) of the thirteen committee seats will, as a minimum, become available for re-election. Should there be more than four potential new committee members standing for election, the number of existing committee seats made available will increase accordingly, to a maximum of six.

4.3 Re-election of existing members to a new year's committee will initially depend on their attendance at the previous year’s monthly meetings. Should this be equal, then attendance at meetings two years prior will be considered. This being equal, the decision will be made by the drawing of lots.

4.4 Candidates for the role of MSC chairman must be active MSC committee members, with a minimum of twelve months' continuous service, a satisfactory attendance and performance record, and not subject to any MFC restrictions.

The chairman will be elected by the standing committee at the first committee meeting after the AGM but must also be acceptable to the majority of those that served on the committee in the preceding year. If there are no committee members that served in the preceding year, then the chairman is elected by the standing committee.

In the event of a tied vote involving the previous year's chairman, the standing chairman will prevail and will serve for the next year."

4.5 Where more than one candidate contests the role of chairman, with none having served in that role before, and a tied vote occurs, then the chairmanship for the coming year will be decided by the casting vote of the existing chairman, should (s)he still hold the position. Should this not be the case, the casting vote will be made by one of the other existing honorary officers, in order of precedence: vice chairman, secretary, treasurer. Should the election still be unresolved, the chairmanship will be decided by the drawing of lots.

4.6 The committee will also elect a vice chairman, secretary and treasurer using the same voting procedure as that for chairman. Should there be insufficient committee members of twelve months' satisfactory standing for each role, this criterion of twelve months' standing will be set aside.

4.7 Any serving committee member whose conduct is considered detrimental to the MSC or its reputation, or who conducts themselves in a manner considered unacceptable by the majority of the committee, may be forced to relinquish their position if voted by the majority of the committee. In the event of an equal vote, the chairman shall have the casting vote.

Should committee members be unable to attend any meeting, they must give their apologies in advance to the secretary. Committee members should understand that failure to attend two out of three consecutive MSC committee meetings without good reason, may attract sanction.

4.8 If the post of any committee member should fall vacant during a term, the service committee shall have the power to fill the vacancy, subject to a majority vote, until the next AGM.

Each meeting of the MSC committee must be attended by a quorum of in excess of 50% of standing committee members.

5. MSC COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES

The MSC committee will

5.1 Provide support, advice and represent alongside, if requested, any member involved in disciplinary procedures instigated by MFC.

5.2 Make all best efforts, using all available media, to collect the views of the majority of the membership.

5.3 Represent the interests of the membership in all aspects of attending games, both at home or away.

5.4 Monitor the conduct and performance of the supporter director to ensure they meet the criteria of the Terms of Reference. If the committee considers either or both of these to have fallen below the acceptable standard, the committee will inform the football club. Subject to mutual agreement, a new election will be held.

5.5 Organise events to encourage the positive social aspects of MSC membership.

6. GENERAL MEETINGS

6.3 An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) may be called upon the request of 25% of the general membership. Notice of the intention to hold an EGM and the reason should be served on the secretary in writing. The EGM must be held no later than 21 days following receipt of this notice.

6.4 The chairman of the committee shall hold both a deliberative and a casting vote at any MSC meeting.

6.5 Any change to the MSC constitution shall require a two thirds majority acceptance vote of those members present at the vote.

6.6 Any proposal to change the constitution must be submitted in writing to the secretary within seven days of the announcement of the AGM. The secretary must then publicise the proposal(s) in the remaining fourteen day period, allowing these to be submitted for discussion and vote at the AGM.

14 March 2015 - Millwall up a Mountain

The MSC were recently contacted by one of our supporters who is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro this September.

"I've decided to take on the tallest free standing mountain in the world with the aim of raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. In order for me to attempt it, I need to cover the minimum £3800 sponsorship. I have already paid the initial payments (flights, hotel, etc) and have many other things to complete (visas, jabs, kit, etc). Please note - none of your donations go to me, only the charity.

Many people fail in climbing this mountain and unfortunately many lose their lives trying. I'm in decent shape and have chosen the quickest, most challenging, six day 'Machame' route this September.

Please help me with support this charity by visiting my Just Giving page. Kind regards, Mark"

11 March 2015 - Lions from Down Under visit The Den

Recently members of the Jones Family from Perth, Australia visited The Den and Dad Stuart told the MSC more about the trip.

"Our visit was initially organised around my fifteen year old son Jacob, who was lucky enough to be invited to join training with the Millwall Academy U15s for a few weeks. As you can imagine, as an Aussie, this was a dream come true for him. Having English relatives that support the team, he has followed them since he was little and has followed the careers of fellow Aussies such as Timmy Cahill and Lucas Neill, who have spent time at Millwall.

During the visit, the opportunity to present the man of the match trophy came up and, of course, we jumped at the chance. Jacob thoroughly enjoyed the day and we were really looked after by everybody involved. We had time in the players’ lounge with a meet and greet and made the most of it by having photos taken with the players.

The matchday atmosphere was something we don’t experience in Perth and it was a shame they lost. Seeing the talent come through the system, it won’t be long before we’re flying high again.

We’ve spoken to the Academy and suggested bringing the Millwall training experience to Perth. We’d love to assist and explore this idea further.

Back home, Jacob has great banter going with his soccer mates and wears his Millwall shirt with pride. He currently trains with Perth Glory’s U18s and wears his shirt to training."

23 February 2015 - Rotherham Police Welcome Millwall Fans

South Yorkshire Police officers aim to deliver a safe, enjoyable environment when Rotherham United meet Millwall FC at the New York Stadium on 28 February. The Championship teams will take to the pitch in Rotherham at 3pm on Saturday, and fans should expect a welcoming and reassuring police presence, which is prepared to react and deal with any disorder that may occur, says Match Commander, Chief Inspector Richard Butterworth.

More than 10,000 supporters are expected to attend the game at the New York Stadium, on New York Way, with 1,300 Millwall fans predicted to arrive from London and advised by the licensee of the Bridge Inn that they will be able to benefit from increased capacity at the premises.

Chief Inspector Butterworth, who is overseeing the policing of the match, said: “Welcoming fans while preventing crime and disorder is a key focus. We aim to deliver a safe, enjoyable environment for fans, the public and those going about daily business. “We hope those attending the game have a pleasant time and that there is minimal disruption. No level of violence or disorder will be tolerated, and we will have the resources in place to deal with any issues that do occur. “I would advise all fans to plan their route to the game and leave plenty of journey time, due to an inevitable increase in traffic in the area.”

Rotherham United and South Yorkshire Police have been liaising with Millwall FC and their supporters’ clubs to ensure this an enjoyable and safe fixture.  Paul Davis, stadium manager for Rotherham United, said:"‘Rotherham United would like to welcome Lions fans to the AESSEAL New York Stadium for the first time in what is likely to be an exciting encounter for both sets of supporters. “Turnstiles will open at 1.30pm and kiosks will be open to serve a full range of refreshments. Please note that there are no ticket sales on the day so all tickets must be purchased in advance from Millwall FC.”

South Yorkshire Police will communicate with Rotherham United and Millwall FC fans via social media both before and during the match, advising on turnstile opening times, transport options, refreshments, and any issues that may occur. For updates, please follow @Police_RUFC and @SYPRotherham on Twitter.

2 November 2014 - Millwall Downunder Latest

Following on from their last update, Millwall Downunder kids have been performing well in their local football division as reported below.

Millwall Downunder NB vs Millwall Downunder RB.

Rivals for 30 minutes, some of these kids share a winter team, go to school together and are best mates but all that was put aside for the game. With Millwall Down under Navy Blue (NB) 2nd (of 12) in the table on 12 points and Royal Blue (RB) trailing back in 8th on 6 points the favourites were clearly the Navy Blues but the Royal Blues had a point to prove.

The first 5 minutes were frantic with the Royal Blues clearly here to take the 3 points. They had all the possession, 3 or 4 chances and the will to win, the Navy Blues clearly were not ready for this onslaught but they defended resolutely and kept the opposition out and started to gain control of the game. The Royal Blues couldn't keep up the pace that they started the game and conceded two goals, one a break away by one player who rounded a couple and finished with a fine shot. The 2nd coming from a corner that was slotted in at the back post.

Half time came with the Navy Blues in the lead but with a talking to about effort from the coach. And without doubt the Royal Blues were told to start the 2nd half how they started the first because they were at the Navy Blues again and managed to get on the score sheet with a goal that was all about hunger with defenders being shrugged off and the ball being smashed into the roof of the net from close range.

The game then went into end to end stuff with no team getting the upper hand until Navy blue broke down the right and a great cross was clipped through the keeper's legs, 3-1 to Navy Blue. The sun was going down and so were the Royal Blues but brilliant performances from both teams. Onto the finals in December and I'll keep you updated with what happens then.

22 September 2014 - Memorial Garden

As mentioned both in August’s Fan on the Board Report and in the minutes of July’s MSC/Club meeting, the Memorial Garden in the grounds of the club has received extra attention recently. News came through that the garden had fallen into some disrepair, mainly due to issues with the lorry park on the other side of the perimeter fencing. The problem was discussed at one of the MSC committee’s monthly meeting and we were able to offer the club a practical solution and assistance. Kevin Allen was elected to the MSC committee at the AGM earlier this year and volunteered to spend some of his free time bringing the memorial garden back up to scratch and maintain it going forward, while the club will supply materials.

Kevin reports ‘So far, I’ve made two visits to the memorial garden, and I plan to get along on a weekly basis. At the first visit, I tidied the plants and began applying preserver to the wooden fencing. For the second visit, I continued with the preserving of the fencing with the intention of finishing it off, but the weather had other ideas, so hopefully I’ll finish it next time, when I also plan to polish the memorial plaques. I picked up more litter and it’s so disappointing to come along on a matchday and see people drink, smoke and eat burgers in an area set aside for friends and family to remember their loved ones. We’re looking into erecting more fencing that will help mark the area as separate from the general club grounds and hope that people will show due respect. I’m honoured to tend to this area, especially as I intend to be there myself someday, and hope this helps make a real contribution. We also plan to plant some more plants and maybe a tree, although this may await the move of the garden as part of the regeneration."

19 September 2014 - Parking in Mercury Way and Surrey Canal Road

The Millwall Supporters Club has been contacted by Amber Management who are a managing agent for some of the residential blocks in the area by Mercury Way and Surrey Canal Road. Signs have now been erected but the management company want to make Millwall fans aware that parking in this area could result in parking fines. We advise all Millwall supporters to seek alternative parking arrangements when attending home matches.

We have members who are ‘genuine’ Millwall fans having grown up in England, we have Aussie members who have one way or another found themselves down the Den and caught the bug, we have Aussie members who are diehard Millwall but have never left the shores of Australia and we have Aussie members who just happen to like Millwall and want to be part of Millwall Downunder.

We have over 50 signed up members who now own a T-shirt or polo, plus another 10-20 that I’m still working on or need a little nudging. I’ve just sent out the second  lot of merchandise so I’m hoping that like last time we get some more interest when the recipients hit Facebook and Twitter sporting their new clobber!

One of our Sydney members (an ex South Stand/Cold Blow Lane lower dweller)
at Adelaide Oval for an Aussie Rules game

Last spring (your autumn) I had an Under 8’s team called Ryde Lions playing in a 6-a-side comp in my local area. This year we have two teams (in Under 9’s), one called Millwall Downunder NB (Navy blue) and another called Millwall Downunder RB (Royal Blue), (the spreadsheet didn’t fit the full names on hence NB and RB!)

And if you haven’t seen already, we’ve had a pie n mash night, don’t tell anybody but we managed to get hold of a genuine recipe! One of our members is a chef so he took care of the prep and we held a night at a pub called the Red Lion (which we’ve made our HQ) which went well. We have another night next Friday (19th) where we hope to get more success and further exposure for Millwall Down Under.

12 September 2014 - Junior Lions Funday

We are pleased to announce that the Junior Lions are hosting their annual Junior Lions Fun Day on Sunday 21 September between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm at the Lions Centre.

The event promises to be a fun packed day for the Junior Lions with activities such as inflatable slides, bouncy castles, football challenges, face painting and Zorb racing.

But there’s plenty more to be excited about! Zampa and Bolina will be around to join in the fun and the Merchandise and Candy Stalls will also be open!
As ever, Millwall’s players will also be in attendance to sign autographs and pose for photographs from 12.00 to 3.00 pm.

Junior Lion members will gain free entry into the event when showing their 2014/15 membership or season ticket. If you’re not a member, however, don’t worry you will be able to pay £2 at the entrance to the Lions Centre (cash only) and can pick up a Junior Lions sign-up form. Please note that there can be no more than two adults per child at the Fun Day and entry for parents is free.

Unfortunately, there will be no car parking available at the stadium or Lions Centre. Limited car parking will be available on Verney Road (opposite Zampa Road).

5 August 2014 - BT Sport at The Den

The MSC, after listening to fan feedback, have supported the club by paying for a BT Sport subscription at The Den.

This will ensure that fans can come to The Den early on match days and enjoy a drink with fellow supporters around the ground while watching the early kick off matches on television before our kick off. Several times last season there were no early kick off games on Sky Sports leaving those supporters who wished to watch football with only Sky Sports News for entertainment at lunchtime.

Games shown on BT Sport will be available to supporters to watch in the SE 16 Bar area, ‘Arrys Bar, The Executive Areas and of course on the concourses. The MSC hope that this will help to support the club by encouraging fans to come to the bars at The Den prior to our game kicking off.

If any supporter has any idea on other initiatives they think will be good for the fan base please do not hesitate to contact the MSC Committee via email or phone.
