29 March 2014 - Fan on the Board Candidate Statement

Yesterday evening the MSC received the following from candidate Dave Bannon formally withdrawing from the election process.

Why I’m standing down.

Having listened to varying statements over the past few days regarding the Position of FOTB, I have had some concerns over the varying claims regarding the funding of the club's annual strategy meeting and in general the other things FOTB is expected to fund.

Having asked for clarification from the MSC and having then spoken with MSC chairman Bob Asprey, who was able to clarify the strategy meeting is in fact only three days and not five, however my concerns over the financial commitments do not come down to being able to afford to do it, simply I can but with three young boys it came down to a moral question I have had to ask myself.

That was if I could justify spending near on around a couple of thousand pounds on a three day trip and spending on average £200 every other week on away games against spending at least some of that on my family and frankly, the answer was no, I really cannot justify doing so, given that it would seem, according to the present incumbent, that it is expected, it would mean to myself that I am not giving the role 100% and with any job I have ever done, I have always given this or simply not done the job.

Had I originally known this I may have had second thoughts about entering the race. However, as Bob Asprey pointed out, it’s not a written requirement for FOTB to make these financial commitments and each person will do the role slightly differently, but as a basic principle I would expect to carry out the role to at least the basic level the previous FOTB has done and at least match the level of commitment and diligence he has shown.

At no time have I intended to deliberately slur one of the other candidates and whilst my passion for the role may have clouded what I wrote, I genuinely wish both the remaining candidates the best of luck with the election.

Finally may I thank the MSC staff for the fairness and help they have shown to me during this process and I really have been impressed by their level of commitment in the essential and voluntary roles they carry out every week and hopefully I look forward to working with them in the future.

Dave Bannon.

1 March 2014 - Millwall Supporters' Club Statement

Millwall Football Club is currently committed to its greatest ever expenses in terms of player and manager costs, together with further unexpected expenditure related to the off the field dispute with Lewisham Council over the sale of pockets of land, currently leased to the club, to a property development company. Further, the club is now obliged to meet the terms of the Financial Fair Play regulations, linking outlay to revenue.

As such, the committee of the MSC understands the need for an increase in the price of season tickets. The first proposal presented to the committee was for a significantly higher percentage rise to that formally announced today but, following some discussion, the increases we now see in the range of 3-4% were considered acceptable. This takes into account the fact that these are the first price rises for three seasons, and a current national inflation rate of c 2%.We're sure our older fans will be pleased to see that the club has agreed to retain the reduced rate for 'seniors' from age 60, not 65, which was also part of the discussion.

The MSC hopes the club's followers will understand the need to support the club financially at this important time and believes that loyal fans will, wherever possible, continue to show their

He has contributed to the fans having more influence at the Den now than ever before, and long may it stay that way. However, his term will shortly be up and so now is the time to seek nominations for the next Fan On The Board. Pete has indicated that he does intend to stand for re-election, but nominations are open for all MSC members who qualify according to the Terms of Reference. Candidates must be proposed by an MSC member and seconded by two other members, and applications in writing must be delivered by Saturday 1 March to MSC at the Den.

7 February 2014 - Regeneration Update

Following the news and associated press articles that have been released in the past week, Fan on The Board, Peter Garston has been liaising with a number of external bodies in order to start to formulate a campaign plan. The first stage of this campaign is now live via an online petition to get Lewisham Council to revisit their decision to sell three areas of land to Renewal in close proximity to The Den. You can sign the petition here. 5 February 2014 - Millwall Supporters’ Club Regeneration Statement

Millwall Football Club supporters will be stunned and disappointed with the latest news regarding the property regeneration project for the area surrounding The Den.

Millwall has been situated in South Bermondsey for some 104 years. The club has provided, and continues to provide, employment and award winning community work to help this unfashionable area of London. It has also brought First Division football to the area and an FA Cup Final appearance in 2004.

Lewisham Council has been supportive of the club in the past, providing shirt sponsorship in the 1980s and sending its Mayor to celebrate the club’s achievements on occasions such as the 125th  anniversary celebrations. It is therefore clear that the contribution the club has made to the community has obviously been recognised by the council. It was most recently clearly seen in the great support the club gave to the campaign to save the Accident and Emergency Department of Lewisham Hospital.

It therefore seems odd and hostile that the council now plans to sell land currently leased to the club and situated within the stadium area to a property developer that has no long term association with the district and who will move out once the development is complete.

Lewisham Council should continue to recognise Millwall’s contribution to the area and should foster the commercial growth of the club rather than turning aside club proposals for the land, which would give the club a chance to maintain and improve its performance.

It appears that the council has not bothered to give real consideration to the club’s plans and this has shocked our Chairman and left him feeling isolated. It would be more progressive for Lewisham to show a commitment to maintain and build the club via a constructive relationship rather than selling land with little care for the club’s input.

The MSC is currently consulting with its Fan on The Board to ascertain the best course of action to take in the face of Lewisham Council’s current stance.

4 February 2014 - Regeneration - from FOTB

The regeneration has been going on for the eight years I have been on the board. There have been times when it seemed it was dead in the water, and others when it looked like the club it would achieve its goal of getting the finances required to secure our future for many years. All along, Lewisham Council have been afforded hospitality and support by the club in many council driven issues such as the recent Save Lewisham Hospital campaign. We, as fans, along with the club threw our weight behind the campaign and played a key role in helping keep Lewisham A&E open. The council publicly and privately led all at Millwall to believe that we would be key in any redevelopment, but in recent months we have noticed the council distancing themselves from us and then the final blow was them indicating their support for Renewal without any explanation or much notice. So now we are in a position where an external property developer could hold the key to our future, given to them by the council who claims it champions community. The only positive to come out of this is the fact that once again when we are challenged by external forces the Chairman shows his resolve and commits himself to the future of our club. I know John Berylson very well and one thing he will not do is shirk a challenge. He will fight our corner to make sure that Millwall Football Club continues to play football at The Den for years to come. When called upon we will need to do whatever is required to fight for our club. I hope the people of the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign return our support if needed as well. Once I know what is needed by the club to fight the developers, I will co-ordinate all fans via the MSC, Trust, Websites and Fanzines to ensure we are there to make our voices heard.

22 January 2014 - MSC Football Team win 8-2 at Stevenage

The MSC Football team travelled to Stevenage to take on their supporters team in a London (yes that is a loose geographical description!) Cup match on the morning of the Middlesbrough match on the last Saturday before Christmas. The weather was abysmal with lots of rain and strong winds, both leading up to and during the match. Luckily the match was held on 3G astroturf so the game went ahead.

Although Millwall were the vastly superior team, things stopped looking quite so comfortable when after having lead 3-0 at half time, Stevenage then pulled a couple of goals back and hit the post which would have brought the sides level, but Millwall soon went up the other end and took advantage of the miss and stretched their lead. Goals then went flying into the Stevenage net, many of the goals were spectacular. Young Freddie Amor scored four goals himself as they struggled to handle is pace and skill and Jamie Gayle’s late goal was a real cracker from 30 yards plus to seal the comprehensive victory.

The MSC team eventually ran out 8-2 winners. It was a great all-round team performance with everyone having outstanding games but special mention goes to striker Kevin McEvoy who worked tirelessly and set-up many of the goals

28 October 2013 - Millwall. The biggest small club in the world

Twitter is a powerful tool, and has brought numerous Wall fans on the other side of the world together, to not only start an official Supporters Club but to also represent the club in a 5 a-side tournament in Sydney.

After drawing giants like Celtic (2-2), Liverpool (0-2), Man City (2-4), and Everton (6-2), the Aussie Lions were unfortunate not to reach the second round despite having a great day. After recently being treated to two games televised on Setanta Australia, the Wall Down Under supporters club has continued to grow.

It seems that the ex-pat Wall contingent is growing by the minute, with supporters from Western Australia, Brisbane, and Melbourne quickly getting in contact with the originators in Sydney to form this unique Supporters Club.

The boys are in constant search of fellow Millwall fans Down Under and have formed a Twitter account and a Facebook page. Please do get in touch via either link or directly with founders Nick How or Bondi Lion if you know any Aussie Wall supporters.
