23 July 2013 - 92 clubs in 92 hours

92 clubs in 92 hours – that's the challenge a team faces when it aims to visit all Football League grounds to raise money for the charity Help for Heroes. The four man squad will leave Wembley Stadium after England's World Cup qualifier with Montenegro on Friday October 11 and aim to be back in time for the game where Roy Hodgson's men take on Poland on Tuesday, October 15. They will all take turns at driving their 2,600 mile route, collecting donations along the way.

Two of the team have military experience, Darren Young served with the Royal Air Force while Mark Burns is a serving member of HM Armed Forces as well as being a coach at Swindon Town FC Academy. Football fans and businessmen Simon Cox and Mike Peters complete the starting line up. All four have two things in common, a love of the beautiful game and a passion for raising money for worthwhile causes.

The group welcomes any sponsorship individuals, football clubs or businesses can offer. It is particularly keen to hear from anyone who has a vehicle they could use to get them through their route. Anyone who would like to assist in any way can check out their website or call Simon Cox on 07533 774420.

24 June 2013 - Lion King Of Mount Kilimanjaro!

After spending years helping raise funds for the Finlay Cooper Fund through charity football matches, 10k runs and half marathons and various other events somebody within the FCF committee decided on a trek to Kilimanjaro.

After a few drinks at a Sportsman’s dinner this seemed a pretty good idea and no great shakes – so count me in I said........oh dear
On the 7th June, myself Colin Cooper, Craig Hignett and Sky’s legendary sports presenter Jeff Stelling flew out from Heathrow to Nairobi to undertake a challenge that was far bigger than we all expected. We were accompanied by a further 11 fool hardy trekkers who had also shown a willingness to raise funds for such a great cause.

I certainly had trained as hard as I had for anything previously, and felt pretty confident that the challenge albeit a tough one, would be achievable.
Now I loved Coops as a player at Millwall and over the last decade or so we have become very good friends, but even I was horrified to see that for the next 6 nights our friendship would be tested within a two man tent which was no bigger than an inside of a mini !!!

The team of trekkers all got on very well and we certainly supported each other through some very tough days and nights. For those who don’t know, climbing Kilimanjaro is more of an endurance test not to mention the affects of altitude that seriously come into play pretty much after about 12/13000ft.

From day 1 when we went through the Machame gate and trekked for close on 8hrs, to the unbelievable tough summit night / day where we trekked for close on 15hrs we all worked as a team which culminated in us ALL getting to the summit (19,341ft) Coops, Higgy and Jeff had been doing “Live” updates each day to Radio Tees and on the day we reached the summit Coops became very emotional “Live” on air....and rightly so.

This really put things into perspective as to why we were all climbing this mountain – For those who don’t know Coops, he is a real gentleman and how he has coped with losing Finlay is nothing short of remarkable – We all had personal goals in our quest to reach the summit and when the going got tough, which believe me it did for me, my dear old Mum who I lost just over a year ago drove me on.....

Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro was not only one of the most physically / mentally toughest things I have done, but also one of the most emotional – Not a dry eye in the house from 15 of us when we got to the top and all have helped raise significant funds for a fantastic charity.

If you ever get the opportunity to climb Kilimanjaro then take it, as I said a tough challenge but something I’m very proud of achieving and knowing the hours of sweat and tears will go someway to helping some terminally ill children.

Thanks to all those who have supported me not only with generous donations but also words of encouragement – As for new challenges for the coming year, I think I’ll stick to the charity football matches and gentle jogs !!!

17 June 2013 - Family Enclosure

Since it emerged that the club were implementing the moving of the FE to the Dockers Upper, without the knowledge of MSC, the FOTB and the ST holders in the blocks concerned, the MSC (and FOTB) have been engaged in copious correspondence with the club regarding this.

a. The non-consultation issue. Obviously the MSC committee were annoyed about this and said so. Originally we didn't know that Pete Garston hadn't been consulted either. It took quite a few days to ascertain who, in making the decision to hurriedly implement this, didn't consult who, but Andy Ambler and Alan Williams do appear to recognise that this should not have happened in the way it did. We don't expect a repetition of this non-consultation, and subsequent events, such as the 2013-14 Adult Membership package which has been discussed, suggests that the fans will, again, have the opportunity to have their input.

b. The plan for the Family Enclosure. Unfortunately this has got slightly lost in the furore. In our opinion the plans are mostly but not all good. The club need an appropriate area in the stadium to house what they hope will be an influx of new junior lions. Nowhere in the stadium is ideal for this, all have various pros and cons. The club have gone for the Dockers Upper Blocks 13 and 14 which is a reasonable compromise although it wouldn't, of course, have been the choice of those with season tickets there. The predictable issues would more than likely have been avoided with a proper consultation with FOTB, MSC, the Junior Lions and indeed the ST holders in those blocks.

One of the biggest questions is the club's stated intention to prevent adults using the new FE without having their child or children with them. This looks ambitious, particularly regarding midweek matches when far fewer juniors attend. This looks as though it could now be reviewed, but nevertheless the new FE will be much more child-focused, and will feature kids' facilities and activities not seen before at the Den, along the lines of what is being implemented at other grounds, such as a play room with X-Boxes, etc.

If you are annoyed regarding the non-consultation, we agree with you. If you have specific queries or complaints regarding how the new Family Enclosure affects you, then contact the club or email the MSC.

12 June 2013 - Big Kitch Appeal - The Return

Following the success of last season's major fundraising event following the sudden death of Millwall Legend Barry Kitchener, his daughter Nikki will be returning to The Den in August this year.

With the date yet to be confirmed in order to coincide with the first home fixture of the season, Nikki and her team will this year be trading in their bikes for walking shoes as they aim to walk the 140 plus miles from Goleston Beach in Norfolk to The Den! The reason for this is it is more accessible for those who want to join in for any distance to do so!

You can contact Nikki on Twitter or by email. Further information can be found here.

16 April 2013 - MSC Statement

The Fan Director, Millwall Supporters Club and the Lions Trust take this opportunity to wholly condemn the shameful scenes witnessed during the FA Cup semi final at Wembley on 13 April.

Supporters guilty of illegal and violent activity will have to suffer the consequences of their action. It seems clear that those involved were not the regular Millwall fans who want success for our club. Their actions severely damage our football club and undermine its progress. A full debate will need to be had regarding the authorities’ failure to act in a timely manner.

We would like to confirm our wholehearted and total support for the Football Club: the chairman John Berylson, the board, players, management and staff. Our intention is to fully support the progress of our club and help our club in the good work it carries out through its well respected community projects.

Pete Garston – Fan Director
Bob Asprey – Chairman, Millwall Supporters Club
Nick Hart – Chairman, The Lions Trust
The Millwall Supporters Club Committee.

12 April 2013 - Important Wembley Information

Following liaison with the local Metropolitan Police the MSC can advise of the following measures taking place at Saturday's FA Cup Semi Final:

After asking about standing, the Wembley safety officer has said that they do not have a problem with people standing when it is safe, ie at lower level, but the higher level is quite dangerous to stand as the incline is so steep. There may be PA announcements to ask people to sit but I have been assured that no one will be thrown out simply for standing, as long as it is safe and they are not upsetting those around them by being in their way.

We were advised that the kiosks will be open all day so there is no rush to get drinks and food. They have done this to encourage people to get into the stadium early to prevent a backlog at the turnstiles and fans missing any of the game. Alcohol will be served all day too.

All pubs and off-licences will be closed one hour prior to kick off. (4.15pm) and they will no re-open until 15 mins after kick off In order for everyone to make it safely to the stadium and into their seats in time for kick off.

There will be no games televised in any licensed establishment within a one mile radius of the stadium to try and prevent people turning up for the occasion without a ticket.

There is a controlled drinking zone within a one mile radius of the stadium, so no street drinking is allowed. Off licenses are being advised not to sell more than 4 cans of beer per person.

4 March 2013 - Sky Sports respond to the MSC’s Letter

After our letter to Sky Sports News in the aftermath of their racism feature, Sky contacted the MSC. Consequently three members of the committee visited their studios and met with the Executive Editor of Sky Sports News and two others. It was an open and constructive meeting, and all our well documented points had a full airing; everything was covered.

Here is a full summary of the meeting:

They claimed they didn’t have an anti-Millwall agenda, or indeed a deliberate pro-Premier League stance at Sky.

They had visited 12 clubs at which they had been made aware by black players of incidents of racist abuse.  These grounds spread from the Premier League through to the Blue Square Premier.  Surprisingly, it was only at Millwall and Burnley that they were able to obtain footage of racist abuse. Burnley featured briefly in the programme and the Lancashire club chose not to respond on camera, providing only a written statement.

Sky chose to feature Millwall heavily as the incidents they filmed at our ground encapsulated the kind of behaviour that should be eradicated from the game.

The MSC were able to show a number of examples of racial incidents occurring at higher profile clubs. This information was readily available on the internet. Sky responded by saying that some on these incidents occurred at FA Cup matches where they could not film. The MSC made the point that if the broadcaster really wanted to tackle this serious problem much greater effort should be made to expose incidents particularly at high profile clubs as this will have more effect. Merely going down the well trodden path of involving Millwall has less effect and indeed damages a smaller club trying honestly to fight this problem.

The MSC strongly objected to the programme's inference of associating all Millwall fans with the behaviour filmed. This was insulting to the vast majority of decent Millwall supporters.  With these points made, Sky accepted that as it turned out, the report was very Millwall focused, and very negative. They claimed this was not what was intended.

They admitted that they had not anticipated the immediate impact the programme would have on Millwall FC, their staff and management, the Millwall Community Scheme and Millwall supporters. Further, they had not anticipated the potential damage to the club both commercially and image-wise.

They had thought long and hard about reporting Mr Scanlon to the authorities after filming. Ultimately they chose to continue with the making of the programme as planned. They felt at the time that reporting that one incident would give an extremely negative view of Millwall. They were, not surprisingly, very careful to ensure that everything they did was legal and fully documented. The MSC suggested that given Sky's agenda to rid racism from the game, the decision to make the programme and sit on evidence of clear racism was inconsistent.

We had a long discussion regarding whether the programme helped or hindered the fight against racism. The MSC considered it had hindered the fight. Ultimately Sky agreed it was a bad thing that the very people involved in activities to combat racism in the Millwall community, day in day out, felt undermined and demoralised by the programme.

The future. It is not Sky’s intention to make a “follow up programme”, although they will more than likely return to the subject again. The MSC emphasised their hope that Sky's "in depth" investigation will not just concentrate on one club i.e us, and will adopt a more sensible stance of looking at the problem across the game.  Sky has, however, established relationships with both the club and the supporters' club, and should now have a vehicle to publicise ‘good news stories’ about Millwall and their fans. The MSC gave them a couple of ideas to think about and hopefully act upon. We will likely be their first port of call if they do anything to highlight a club genuinely engaged on helping in the fight against racism and inner city deprivation.

t is understood that the club have invited Sky to a match at the Den, and are also ready to open their doors to other club activities.

The MSC is aware that some of our support have given up on engaging the media due to the poor press the club and its fans constantly receive. This is an understandable stance.  The Supporters Club has, however, taken this opportunity to build a relationship with a national broadcaster that has a responsibility to report fairly and sensibly.  It is hoped that this engagement will produce a more balanced and accurate image of our club in the future because our fans are entitled to "Believe in Better".

19 February 2013 - MSC get the better of Watford Supporters Club.

At the third time of asking the MSC eventually got to play their IFA Cup match away to Watford on Saturday 9th February. It was a great cup tie in which the Lions prevailed on penalties.

Millwall started the match strongest and played the best football of the first half with neat passing creating opportunities that Watford struggled to keep out. It was 2-0 on 42 minutes when Kevin Noel and Kevin McEvoy exchanged passes before feeding Jamie Gayle who beat a man before getting his shot away which beat the goalkeeper and was rolling into the unguarded net before Martin Thomas applied the final touch ahead of a retreating defender.

On 83 minutes disaster struck as skipper Barber brought down a Watford attacker who made a smart turn in the area. Watford duly netted the penalty to bring the game level meaning it finished 2-2.

Kevin McEvoy

In this cup there is no extra time so it went straight to penalties. It was fitting that McEvoy would have the deciding say in the match, being one of the original MSC players and having played for the MSC since the first fixture more than 15 years ago. He calmly stroked home sending the keeper the wrong way and putting Millwall through 4-3 on penalties to a semi-final at home to Preston North End.

15 February 2013 - Luton V Millwall Policing Operation

Plans are being finalised for the Luton v Millwall FA Cup 5th round Cup tie on Saturday. A large and very visible police presence will be in the area to help the club with the smooth running of the fixture. It's not planned to close roads, but obviously those living around the area will be familiar with the pre-and post match congestion that can happen when officers escort away coaches and fans from the stadium. The policing operation has a wide remit, and will include colleagues from Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire Constabularies who will be looking after matters south of Luton, along with Thames Valley Police who are assisting with dog section and mounted officers integrated within the operation. British Transport Police will be operating along the whole of the railway line between Luton and London, with officers on trains and at railway stations. Two licensed premises will be welcoming away fans from 10,00 am until the kick off at 12.45, these are Déjà Vu Bar on High Town Road and nearby Charlie Brown's club (corner of Dudley Street and Midland Road). Both are only yards from Luton central railway station. Other town centre pubs will open as normal, but will serve home fans only. The tie is a sell-out, with Millwall bringing 1500 fans to Kenilworth Road. We recommend getting to the ground early as there will be a bigger crowd than usual and potential for congestion and queues. Please don't travel to Luton if you haven't been lucky enough to get a ticket for the game as you will be unable to get into the ground, and unless you are a home fan you will be unable to see it in the pub either.

14 February 2013 - Letter to Sky Sports News and OFCOM

A copy of this letter can be read here.

9 January 2013 - Donation to The Finlay Cooper Fund

Lifelong Millwall fans Jason Pickering and Geoff Williamson recently presented a £3,000 cheque to the Demelza Children’s Hospice in Eltham, South East London, on behalf of the Finlay Cooper Fund. The Fund, which raises funds for children’s causes, was set up by former Lions hero Colin Cooper and his wife Julie in memory of their son who they lost in a tragic choking accident before his second birthday.

Jason and Geoff presented the cheque to the Hospice shortly before Christmas when they also took part in a carol singing session with the young patients. Kate Najdowski, on behalf of the hospice, said: "Having bought us a specialist bed and equipment to administer drugs only a year ago, we were shocked and delighted that the Finlay Cooper Fund had thought of us again in these difficult times when our funding from central resources is being continually cut. The fund certainly helped to make our Christmas."

10 December 2012 - A Lion-hearted effort!

Two Millwall supporters, Ray Sievey and Ian Toal, recently traded in South London for the streets of Valencia when they ran the Valencia Marathon on 18 November. They both only realised the other one was running the day before they flew out after seeing a post on Facebook about  strikes in Spain affecting flights. The two Millwall lads ran together up to the 10 kilometre mark, chatting their way through it. They then agreed to split as Ray wanted to come in just under 4 hours whilst Ian wanted to push on a bit. The crowds lining the streets were superb with bands playing in the street and helping to inspire the runners. Ray kept to his target throughout the race and despite slowing a bit at the end came home in 3 hours 58 minutes and 47 seconds to give him huge satisfaction by narrowly  beating his 4 hour target. Ian was going really strongly up until 22 miles when the lack of time between Valencia and the recent marathon he ran in Berlin hit home and he took his foot off the gas and walked/ran/walked/ran until the last kilometre when he got a second wind and sprinted home to still beat his Berlin time by over 3 minutes, coming in at 3 hours 53 minutes and 56 seconds. It was a Lion-hearted effort by both runners to record personal bests. Both enjoyed the race and their time in Valencia and hope to further improve on their respective times in the Brighton Marathon in April next year.

16 November 2012 - MSC Grievance to the FA

Following the recent incident at The Den involving one of our fans and Marvin Sordell's accusation of receiving racial abuse whilst warming up during the fixture against Bolton Wanderers, which has led to a number of media and news outlets printing incorrect and unsubstantiated comments about Millwall Football Club and our fan base, the MSC have written a letter of complaint to the FA.

"As you know, Marvin Sordell recently made a very serious allegation of racist abuse against a Millwall supporter on Twitter. This started a chain of events, including an FA and club investigation, a mass of critical comment regarding our club and ALL its supporters in the national media, and a ban for a 13-year old fan.

No evidence to support the allegation of racist abuse was found in the investigation. Clearly an unpleasant altercation took place between the child and Sordell. The FA seems satisfied with Millwall FC's actions: to ban the child, offer him an educational programme, and for the child to send an apology to Sordell.

It appears, however, that Sordell has not been required to make any apology for abusing a 13-year old child, nor has he received any censure for, at least, choosing to use social media to make an allegation that he didn't see fit to report to any of the appropriate authorities at the time of the incident. Players have been charged with bringing the game into disrepute for far less and for causing far less damage.

A player has made an unsubstantiated allegation on a social network, as opposed to the appropriate authority, the FA has acted on it and an investigation has been held, which has resulted in a supporter receiving a banning order. This sets a very dangerous precedent. I understand the FA aims to protect players, but surely this should not be at the expense of supporters who turn up and pay good money to see them, when the player is far from blameless.

Is it the FA's intention to censure this player in any way?"

16 October 2012 - Sheffield Wednesday Away, 25 August - Police Response

Following the incidents which occurred before and after our away fixture at Sheffield Wednesday on 25 August - mainly concerning the arrangements in place for the transportation of our fans to Sheffield Railway Station from Hillsborough - the MSC have been liaising with the Football Supporters Federation and South Yorkshire Police. A full response has been received from South Yorkshire Police (below).

When incidents occur, particularly at away venues, the MSC are always keen to hear from fans who are directly affected by poor policing and/or crowd organisation, in order that we can utilise the FSF to their fullest capabilities to get to the bottom of issues and where possible work to get favourable solutions for all concerned. In these circumstances, please contact the MSC either by phone or email so that we can assist.

Hi Amanda,

I have now had chance to speak to the silver commander for the SWFC v Millwall match and a supertram manager.

Obviously the emails you received are the personal experiences of some people who attended the fixture.

I think it is important that the context of this match was that we had received specific intelligence relating to potential disorder and that with little police involvement prior to the match some Millwall fans caused damage to one of the trams. This can even be seen on You Tube and the result of which was that there was some debate within Supertram as to whether there would be any trams for the supporters post match. The trams were only made available following some negotiation with the commander.

Post match because of the potential for disorder it was necessary to ensure that the Millwall fans were separate from the home fans hence the holding to prevent any violence either to or by the away fans. Due to the earlier debate there were no trams in place for the post match return to city and the fans had to wait longer than normal as two trams were brought into position.

What the commander is clear about at this point, having spoken with the bronze commanders, is that once the trams were ready to be loaded they Millwall fans were given opportunity to board them. The loading of trams is the responsibility of Supertram not SYP and they were not forced onto the trams. The bronze commander for that area even walked along the tram doors and told people that there was another one behind and it would be better if they got off the full tram and went to the next one. Noone took up this offer.

No doubt you will be used to conflicting accounts of incidents like this and the debate will continue, the main points from this from our perspective are

  • loading of the trams is not SYP responsibility but even so attempts were made to move people from the full tram to an second one.
  • the time of the journey was due to the actions of some people on the tram.

We are continuing to work closer with supertram management to provide a good service for people wanting to travel to the matches at Hillsborough and providing better communication for the vast majority of people who just want to enjoy football.

What I hope comes out of it is that we can improve the dialogue between supporters groups and police and as long as I am in this post I am happy to be a conduit for that with fixtures in South Yorkshire. This has already been set in motion for when Millwall visit Barnsley in the new year and I will be a position to facilitate the same should Millwall visit Sheffield next season.

Inspector Neil Mutch, Operational Planning Unit, SYP.

5 October 2012 - Well Done Ian!

Last weekend, whilst the Lions secured a valuable point away at Burnley, MSC Treasurer Ian Toal was taking part in the Berlin Marathon raising money for Macmillan Cancer Research in memory of his mother. Despite the last few weeks of training being hampered by an ankle injury, Ian completed the marathon in 3 hours 57 minutes and has raised almost £6,000.

Ian goes on to say "I made it hard for myself by starting towards the back of a huge 35,500 field. That made initial progress difficult for the first six miles or so. I was jumping on the opportunities to sprint up pavements where there was the odd gap in the crowd to try and get back towards my target pace, but as any runner knows that's not good over a long distance race as come the end the extra effort in sprinting uses up more energy. Slow and steady would not have won the overall race, but it would have given me a better time! However, as I approached the final straight there were huge crowds and I managed to respond to that with a good sprint finish up the straight to ensure that 4 hours was beaten comfortably. I gave a look up to the sky when I crossed that line telling my Mum that was for her."

Ian thanks everyone who sponsored him for this event. If you haven't - and would still like to - you can do so here.

26 September 2012 - FOTB / Ridders Joint Statement

From Ridders;

"I would like to clarify the facts around my banning:

On Saturday 23rd against Brighton I was banned from the club for the rest of the season but was told I could appeal in six months. I was initially told that this was as a result of two phone calls reporting me for swearing.

The banning was actually implemented as there had been a number of written complaints from ST Holders who sit in the same stand as me, the complaints covered a couple of games.

The crux of the complaints was that I was shouting abuse and the abuse was in poor taste and things that I am not proud of saying. So much so I am not going to repeat them. If it was just swearing my stance would be different.

The comments I made are not things young fans should hear, all I can do is hold my hands up and apologise for a lapse of judgement, the last thing I'd want to do is offend anyone, especially young Millwall fans as I know that its only the kids getting the bug that keeps our club alive.

I am currently banned and I am going through the appeals process with the help of the FOTB. Thanks, Mark."

"This shows why the only discussions that should be had on specific instances should be between those involved otherwise things become inaccurate and just get out of hand. I realise the stewarding isn't perfect and there are lot of issues, when they are brought up on the whole they are dealt with, sometimes not to the satisfaction of all but sometimes compromises need to be made. There is a meeting being arranged that will involve the stewarding company (Wise) and the Millwall security team. I would like to get people from all different areas of the ground to attend. If you are interested email me. Pete"

17 September 2012 - MSC Committee Treasurer runs for Macmillan Cancer Support

MSC Committee Treasurer, Ian Toal, is running the Berlin Marathon on 30th September 2012 for a cause very close to his heart. Ian says 'I'm raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of my mother who suddenly passed away from cancer just over three years ago. Needless to say she meant the world to me, all mums do, don't they! I'm sure most of you have also had family or friends affected by this terrible disease. In fact more than a third of us will get cancer at some point of our lives‎. The nurses at Macmillan do a great job in providing support to cancer sufferers and their families. If I can raise a good amount it will provide both a fitting tribute to my mother and at the same time help other people and their families through dark times.' You can sponsor Ian here.

Were you at the game? What are your views on the performance? Email or call the show and share your thoughts with the panel and listeners.

Our first guest is Millwall's new left-sided player Scott Malone who joined the club during the summer in a swap deal with Josh Mcquoid. Scott will be letting us know how he has settled in and of his hopes and plans for the season. In the second hour we are joined on the phones by Assistant Manager Joe Gallen who will be talking about tactics, training ground preparations and our style of play. If you have a question for either guest please contact us to ask it!

We also have our usual features of Ted's 'Championship Choice' and Greame's 'Who Are Ya?', plus the chance to phone in your vote for the Lions Live Player of The Month for August. By phoning in your vote you will be entered in to the draw for two tickets to Saturday's visit of Middlesborough and the chance to present the trophy to the winning player before the game.

23 August 2012 - Lions Live Tonight

Lions Live returns to your computers tonight at the usual time of 7.00 to 9.00, so join presenter Sam Brown and the boys from the MSC as the look back at Saturday's disappointing home league opener as well as Tuesday night's fantastic away win at Peterborough to get the Lion's off the mark. Were you at either game? What are your views on the performances? Email or call the show and share your yhoughts with the panel and listeners.

Our first guest on the show sees Millwall CEO Andy Ambler join us in the Studio. Andy will be discussing all the things at the football club that happen behind the scenes, away from the training ground and off the pitch. Have you got a question or view to discuss with Andy? What do you think of the new catering and Cold Blow Lane Bar? How could we make the pre-match atmosphere better for you? Now is your chance to put those questions directly to Andy so email them all in! In the second half of the show we will be speaking on the phone to freshly departed left back Tony Craig. Tony spent two successful spells with the Lions before his summer transfer to Brentford. If you want to share your memories of TC or simply say goodbye, give us a call.

We also have our usual features of Ted's 'Championship Choice' and Greame's 'Who Are Ya?'. This week's competition will see the winner receiving last season's white away shirt signed by the squad, so stay tunned and if you know the answer to the question give us a call.
