31 July 2012 - MSC Takes Fans' Ideas to the Board.

The MSC were recently approached by a website set up by a group of supporters who, via Twitter, had collected from a wide range of Millwall fans, suggestions of ways to improve the overall matchday experience at The Den and increase income for the club. We took these ideas to our monthly meeting with Andy Ambler, Millwall CEO, and he has responded as follows:

Please can you help. A teenage supporter and his father were arrested at Ipswich station following the game on Sat 21 April after the Police assaulted them and are now accused of assult themselves. They remember two females approaching them as they were being taken away to say they had seen everything and they are trying to trace them. Was that you or do you know who it may have been? Please email the MSC if you can help.

Thanks for forwarding on to me the four pages of the fans various suggestions on how to improve income and the matchday experience.

As you are aware many of these topics we have discussed in detail at our monthly Millwall Supporters Club meetings and as always I’m happy to continue to explore ways in which to improve the fans matchday experience, as well as generate much needed revenue for the Club.

In respect of some of the specific issues raised this is my initial response to some of them:-

Ticketing
We feel that as a policy we have continued to have a ticket pricing strategy which reflects good value for all our fans, the season ticket offer especially the ‘early bird’ discount has gone down consistently well with our supporter base and unusually it is one area in which we have not had one single letter or email of complaint during the current campaign.

As you are aware we have raised general admission prices by a small amount this season however, we have also increased the Members discount. We will be looking at other options during the Season including batching certain games together as well as possible ticket grading going forward. The overall objective would be to increase much needed revenue for the Club whilst remaining to offer value to the loyal supporter.

Foreign Fans and Tourists
The Club has a large following from abroad and as we have discussed previously we offer the benefit of Membership to these supporters in order to give them certainty of purchasing matchday tickets.

Many supporters of foreign clubs who are in London for games often visit Millwall as part of their trip, this so we like to always informally show them round and ensure they have the possibility of purchasing tickets, we then point them in the direction of the Club Shop.

We are also looking at the possibility of a Millwall Ground Tour which obviously would help attract new people to The Den including schools, we would ensure that via a headphone type guide the tour would be available in foreign languages but this is a work in progress and will require a five figure investment from the Board.

Schools
Millwall Community Scheme is active in schools and this year alone has worked with many schools and had contact with over 2000 children. The Club in conjunction with the Community Scheme would like to increase the footprint where we engage with schools and we hope to go into some of the locations where our fan base live, (which is outside of our immediate area).

Stewards and Banning Orders
Stewards & Banning Orders have been discussed with the Millwall Supporters Club Committee on a regular basis over the past few years, members of the Committee have visited the control room on matchdays where they have witnessed first hand some of the issues that have to be dealt with. Having said that behaviour has improved as has our reputation and it’s up to all of us to continue this trend, whilst also continuing to train stewards to increase their customer care skills.

Bans are a last resort and the appeal process for those banned has worked very well over the last few seasons. As ever there is always two sides to a story and the enhancement of CCTV has helped to clarify any incidents better than ever before and I now believe no fan has been banned without due justification.

Fan on the Board
Regarding the position of Fan on the Board this is voted for by the fans and ultimately therefore, it is their decision as to who represents them.

Stadium andCatering
We are currently undergoing a refit of all the catering kiosks during the closed season (investing around £160,000). We recently held an open food tasting event at the end of last season, in which fans were able to air their views on the catering at the Club, it was a very positive meeting for both the fans and the caterers, we are positive that the changes agreed upon will go down well with the fans next season.

At the same time we are investing in new televisions on the concourses as well as repainting and changing the photos and signage. The family enclosure was completed last season and we hope to have completed the other areas if not by the start of this season then certainly two to three months in. The Millwall Supporters Club has contributed funds towards some of the TV’s etc and together I am sure we can continue to improve the areas.

Announcer, Sound System and Music
We recently asked for fans to email us with their suggestions of music to be played both pre and post match and we will use the responses to attempt to change the selection, hopefully this will help Deano to build up the atmosphere prior to kick off.

With regard to the sound system we invested £180,000 a few seasons ago, however, we have on occasion had some problems with which the supplier of the system has had to rectify, we will continue to try and improve the sound quality.

Players / Player Days
I believe that Millwall Players are more accessible than many Clubs and do get involved in many activities during the season. Indeed Tam Mkandawire won the PFA Player in the Community last year for his work on anti knife crime and his help in schools (a national award that both he and the Club are very proud of).

As for Player Days as you are aware we already have a Family Day and a Junior Lions Christmas Party that the Manager & ALL Players attend, they spend hours signing autographs at both these events.

Merchandise
The points raised about retail and merchandising have been discussed previously however, what is obvious is that not everybody shares the same opinion in respect of design, quality, accessibility etc etc.

With regard to our manufacturer Macron the quality of the kit and training wear is far more superior then previous suppliers. Fans that see other teams in Nike or Adidas (other than in Premier League) should realise that those Clubs are dealing with associated companies not directly with Nike and Adidas and these products are catalogued, off the shelf shirts and we believe not in keeping with a Club of our size. The price of replica shirts reflects the cost of buying products in many clubs already charging £45 and we are trying to remain competitively priced for our fans.

We are looking to increase and expand our leisure wear range and develop a range which is better in quality and has less “in your face” branding, which fans seem to be asking for.

Website Social Media
The website design is not the Club’s decision. As fans will know most Football League Club websites use identical templates due to the same company providing the central service for websites across the Football League. However, change is coming and we will be launching a new website for the coming season which we hope will be better in design and functionality for the fans.

Twitter
With regard to Twitter the Club has its own Twitter page, we will look at using this to communicate from the Board as suggested. Players are discouraged from using Twitter to comment on football matters! Last year we had a player fined by the Football Association and I think that was a huge wake up call to all the Players.

Use the Fans
We already use many of the Millwall family on a day to day basis with regards to many different aspects, i.e. electrical work, cleaning services, painting, design etc, with many of these services being provided either free or at discounted rates. If any fans have their own company or could offer services that we would require, we are more than happy to hear from them. We did look at getting a directory compiled by Millwall fans for Millwall Fans of all sorts of different companies and services but this failed to get the funding required to print.

Finally thanks again for forwarding the letter, we are all part of the Millwall Family and we are all extremely passionate about our Club, I believe the regular monthly meetings with the Millwall Supporters Club as well as the weekly Lions Live Show broadcast from The Den, show that we do communicate with each other and will always continue to listen and improve.

Kind regards,
Yours sincerely,
Andy Ambler

Chief Executive
Millwall Football Club

25 July 2012 - Praise for Travelling Fans

The Millwall Supporters Club have received a letter from the landlord of the Riverside Hotel which was our designated pub when we visited Ipswich on our last away game of the 2011/12 season. In his letter he praises the behaviour and atmosphere created by our fans, as well as thanking all those who donated for the raffled shirts before we departed for the game. It is all too often that the media and authorities pounce on us for wrongdoings, so we can all be proud of receiving compliments when they come in like this. You can read the full letter here.

17 July 2012 - Millwall and the Festivals

The MSC would like to thank all of the fans who visited the Millwall area at the three summer festivals we attended over the last month - Southwark Park, Danson Park and Dartford. Events like these are key for us to meet the fan base and discuss any items or concerns that you may have. In addition it helps to build the atmosphere before the pre-season games commence. We hope that you enjoyed coming to these events as much as we enjoyed attending them.

10 July 2012 - The New Season Is Fast Approaching

It's just now a little over five weeks until the new season kicks off. The Lions start the new campaign how they ended the last one with a home fixture against Blackpool and we at the MSC are hopeful that we start with the same form as well. It still is not too late to guarantee your seat for every home league fixcture of the 2012/13 season, and there is no better (or cheaper) way of doing so than by purchasing a Season Ticket. By buying a Season Ticket you automatically become a member of the MSC and can purchase tickets for all our away games as well. Alternatively, if your unable to come to the majority of games, why not purchase a membership to the MSC. All members qualify for a £3 discount on home league tickets purchased in advance up to the day before the game. For eitherr option go to millwalltickets.com.

28 June 2012 - 2012/13 Season Shirts

The Millwall Supporters Club are aware that a large number of supporters are expressing their disatisfaction with the designs provided by Macron and released via the official club website on 27th June 2012. We would like to advise all supporters that the MSC had no involvement in the decision of this design.

During the meeting which took place between the MSC and the club on 26th January 2012, the MSC requested that fans be involved in the selection of the 2012/3 shirts by means of a voting / poll process, as used when selecting the home kit for the 2010/11 season. When requested Andy Ambler advised that the kit designs had already been agreed with Macron. Despite requesting to see the design of the kits on numerous occasions these requests have been declined by the club. In order for us to take substantial evidence to the club please email your feedback to us so we can collate them all together and present to the club on the fans behalf. Comments via Twitter, Facebook and message boards will not necessarily be seen by the right people.

This will be just one of many commemorative events and activities planned for next season.

Don't forget that Barry's daughter, Nicole, is undertaking a sponsored bike ride from her home in Norforlk to The Den, planning to arrive before kick off at one of our home games. All money raised will be donated to research into Oesophagal Cancer.

9 April 2012 - Barry Kitchener - FOTB Update

Following Saturday's celebration of Barry Kitcheners life, FOTB Pete Garston spoke to Barry's daughter after the game and updates the fans as follows:

"I spoke to Kitch's daughter today to ask if the funeral was going to be a private affair, she told me anyone would be made welcome although the church is very small. I gave her a card on behalf of all of us fans and I put some flowers at the Den. My suggestion would be anyone who wants to attend does so, but please be mindful that it is a small church, family and close friends should have preference for seating etc. When I spoke to the family they were overwhelmed by todays show of respect for Kitch by both fans and the club.

Service Location - St Andrews Church, Gorleston (Church Road, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, NR31 6LS)
Time of service - 12:30
Date of the service - Wednesday 11 April 2012

If you wish to make a floral tributes or charitable donations, these should be forwarded to brundishandson.co.uk. All charitable donations will be forwarded onto Macmillan Cancer Support.

23 March 2012 - Real Wall Auction

As mentioned last week, Millwall supporter Charlie Pearce was co-ordinating a sealed bid auction for a once in a life time opportunity to be interviewed by Mike Calvin and published in his new book. This auction closed after last Saturday's home fixture against Southampton. Charlie is pleased to announce that the winning bid came from all of the Directors and staff at Southwark Metals and was £4,000! Funds from the auction, together with the £1,000+ from a recent benefit night means a total of £5,000 has been raised and looks like the family concerned will be off to Disney World in Florida in the summer. Charlie says "None of this would of been possible if not for all of the help from Millwall, be it the club or the fans donating prizes and money. I'm completely bowled over by the support of the Millwall Family and thank you all for your help"

22 March 2012 - Andy Ambler and Tony Hazell on Lions Live Tonight

Join presenter Sam Brown and the boys from the MSC on Lions Live between 7.00 and 9.00 pm direct from The Den. This week we start off the show by looking back to Saturday's disappointing last few minutes of madness which saw us concede two late penalties and a defeat against table topping Southampton before we move on to the brighter review of Tuesday's 3-0 win at Doncaster. Were you at either of these games? If so send us your thoughts.

In the first half this week we are joined by CEO Andy Ambler. Andy will spend this time updating us on everything that is happening behind the scenes at the football club. 17 February 2012 - MSC Football Team has a Scottish Adventure

The MSC Football Team had to make a long trek in the second round of the IFA UK Cup on the weekend of the home Southampton FA Cup match. We were drawn away to the winners of the West Ham versus Motherwell 1st Round match. We were hoping our rivals from East London would triumph as the logistics of a short trip across the Thames is a lot easier than a trip to the Glasgow suburbs! It would also have given us the chance of getting one over the Hammers as we more often than not do.

The players of the MSC Football team were keen to make the trip but like most things work got in the way for a few boys who could not get the Friday off work. Most of the team travelled up on the Friday by minibus while three others either flew or took the train.

The weather had been quite mild up there in the week before the game, but we were informed the bad news that there had been a little snow flurry on the Friday and it was bitterly cold when we arrived. We didn’t think it was a problem though and travelled to the great facility at Ravenscraig on the freezing Saturday morning to be told the game which was due to be played on 3G Astroturf was called off!

Motherwell had already been scanning the local area for different pitches. We crossed Motherwell with them to go and visit a grass pitch that was covered in white which we were still going to use after the goal mouths had been treated and lines brushed but then were told that there had been a shift change at Ravenscraig and a different manager was now in charge at the Ravenscraig and the Motherwell guys had told them just how far we had travelled up. The leisure centre thankfully relented and it was game on but only after the Motherwell team set about clearing the lines and the 6 yard box of the ice!

The rest of the pitch remained like an ice rink with the snow having been frozen on from the cold night. This made it very difficult for both teams and our best players struggled on the pitch as they were unable to turn on the ball easily and use their skill to beat players as they would normally. It was a fairly even first half with both sides failing to take the couple of chances they both had meaning it was evenly poised at 0-0.

In the second half we unfortunately fell behind and our goalkeeper Harry Thorpe who was otherwise superb miss-kicked to the opposition player Andrew Mackenzie who took his chance and finished. Our heads did not go down though as our 15 year old striker Freddie Amor who was a real thorn in the side of the home team’s defence collected a pass from Tommy Blackmore and rifled home from the edge of the area just 1 minute later.

Our defence was superb and goalkeeper Thorpe made amends saving one-on-one with the Motherwell strikers on a couple of occasions. Unfortunately though the pressure told as Motherwell scored the winner on 79 minutes as substitute Barry McKnight stole in to finish from 8 yards following a cut-back from the bye-line. We tried our best to get an equaliser but ultimately went down 2-1 but we were certainly proud of our efforts in the game against last season UK League winners on their own patch, especially given we only had a bare 11 starting players including a 15 year old and a 17 year old in addition to the three of us who made up the numbers on the sidelines. We were missing four regulars who might have made the difference to the result.

After the game we were treated to great hospitality by the Motherwell boys who took us to their pub and had laid on loads of Scotch pies for us and complimentary tickets to the Motherwell versus St Johnstone game which gave us the opportunity to see their skipper, a certain Jody Morris net a screamer to equalise.

Hopefully our paths will cross with Motherwell again in the future so we can show them some South London hospitality in return to their huge efforts and kindness in entertaining us so well up there

3 February 2012 - West Ham United v Millwall

West Ham United, Millwall and the Metropolitan Police Service would like to update supporters who are planning to attend the West Ham United versus Millwall match at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday 4 February. Both football clubs and the MPS have been working closely together since August and have formed a strong partnership that aims to deliver an enjoyable afternoon of football for fans of both teams, whatever their age. The game between the two sides in 2009 was a testing occasion for all concerned and many of the lessons learned from that night have already been implemented. When the two teams met at The Den in September 2011, fans from both sides supported their teams in exactly the right way; with passion and noise but with respect for those around them. That helped to create an electric atmosphere inside and outside the stadium where the football was the main talking point afterwards. It is hoped that fans attending the return game at the Boleyn Ground will continue this positive development. To help deliver that, there will be a complete alcohol ban in the stadium and in all surrounding pubs and off-licenses. This ban complements the existing Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) already in place across the borough of Newham. While it is hoped and expected that fans will behave in a respectful manner both inside the stadium and in the surrounding areas, there will be a zero tolerance policy towards anybody who behaves in an inappropriate manner. There will be a large, noticeable MPS presence on duty to help ensure the safety of supporters and they will also deal with any inappropriate behaviour quickly and robustly. Anybody found acting in this way can expect lifetime bans from both clubs and prosecution to the full extent of the law.

2 February 2012 - Cas and Nethers on Lions Live

Two very special guests in the form of Tony Cascarino and Stuart Nethercott join presenter Sam Brown and the boys from the MSC tonight on Lions Live between 7.00 and 9.00 pm. We start off the show looking back to Saturday's last minute draw against Southampton and Tuesday night's cold and poor performance against Watford. We then have the small matter of looking ahead to Saturday's trip across the river to West Ham.

Not only are both our guests past fan favourites, but also still strong supporters of the club. The first hour will see us speaking to former striker Cas who will be talking about his time here and what he went on to achieve from it. The second hour sees our ex-captain Nethers joins us. Both these players love talking about their time here. Email in to the show with your favourite memory of them and any questions you may have.

In addition to our guests we have all the usual features - "Here's Georgie', Ted's 'Championship Choice' and Graeme's 'Who Are Ya?'. The Winner of our telephone competition will receive a limited edition Lions Live hooded top, so listen in for the question and call Anne with the answer.

23 January 2012 - Quiz Night Prize Donated to Help Harry

Millwall's assistant ticket office manager Meranda Eccleston was lucky enough to win a fantastic prize at the recent MSC Quiz Night - but has kindly donated it to raise funds for charity.

Meranda explains: "I won the Kit Sponsorship day for our home game with Leicester City on 14th April 2012, but have donated the prize to my friends Dean and Sam, whose baby Harry is severely ill.

Little Harry has been cared for at the Demelza Hospice since he was born. Although he is due to come home from the hospice very soon he needs lots of care and equipment for this to be possible.

Harry's mum and dad (Dean and Sam) have decided to raffle this prize to raise as much money as possible and split the money between the costs of the equipment needed for Harry and also the Demelza Hospice.

I will be selling raffle tickets on their behalf from the Millwall ticket office and they are priced at £5 per strip. The draw will be made on 14th February. If you can dig deep and help raise funds it would be greatly appreciated."

09 January 2012 - Drinking at The Den - Improvements and Innovations

Those of you who enjoy a drink at The Den before kick-off will have noticed some improvements. Firstly Arry's Bar has undergone a revamp with the MSC paying to have three large flatscreen TVs installed and the club giving the bar a lick of paint and changing the photos around. There is also now a pre-match bar at the back of the Cold Blow Lane End. This is very much a work in progress and it is hoped the more popular it gets, the more money can be spent improving it. Unlike Arry's, children under 14 are welcome. The MSC would welcome your feedback on this facility, together with any ideas you may have for its improvement.

05 January 2012 - Lions Live Returns after its Mid-Season Break

28 November - Who is Real Wall?

Millwall friend and author of Family, Michael Calvin is looking for Millwall fans' help with his new book, provisionally titled Real Wall - Millwall's Living Legends. Michael explains: "While I was writing Family I was intrigued by the character of successful Millwall players. It got me thinking - are they the same type of people down the generations? Anyway, we've come up with a list of 70 players who are still with us. I reckon deserve to be regarded as Real Wall. Here's the twist - I want Millwall fans to decide which 30 I will interview, in depth, for the book. I will be doing a special section on those who are no longer with us ( Harry Cripps will be #1). If you fancy it, just give me your top ten, and I'll collate all the votes. You can send them to me by email, Twitter or you can click here to see the full list and vote online. I've already had nearly 300 replies ( we got it into the Southwark News last week.) and some interesting patterns are emerging".

Our guests this week start off in the first hour with former Lion Trevor Lee. 14 November 2011 - MSC Condemns Ticket Allocation

Millwall Supporters Club condemns Crystal Palace FC for their change of ticketing policy for their forthcoming clash with Millwall at Selhurst Park. Recent matches between Palace and Millwall at Selhurst Park have seen an away ticket allocation of up to 5,000, and indeed only a few weeks ago West Ham had an allocation of 4,000. We recognise that some disorder has occurred in recent derby matches between these clubs, but for the match due to take place on November 26th, Millwall have received an allocation of only 2,600. These tickets sold out quickly to season ticket holders. Further, three of the eight blocks in the Arthur Wait stand are to be left empty.

It is inevitable that ticketless fans will travel to the stadium, and also that away fans will buy tickets in the areas for home fans. Consequently the potential for disorder inside and outside the ground is increased by this decision.

The MSC have urged Millwall FC to request further tickets from Palace but they have not been forthcoming.

Whether it is Crystal Palace FC or the local police who pushed for this allocation, we believe it is a poor decision which will cost the club a significant sum of money and which increases the likelihood of disorder at this fixture.

16 September 2011 - Irons in the Lions Den

As we all know Saturday 17 September sees the much anticipated visit of our close rivals from across the river, West Ham United. Its been some six and half years since we last played then at The Den in a league match and all of us will be hoping for a repeat of the 'Mothers Day Massacre' 4-1 win where we also missed two penalties.

We would like to remind all fans that in view of the 12.30 kick off, and the game being a sell out your are advised to get to the stadium early in order to avoid any last minute rush to your seats. Please bear in mind that the Zampa Road entrance is closed both before and after this game and entrance and exit will be via Stockholm Road (Gate 2) and Gate 3 which can be accessed via Surrey Canal Road.

'Arrys Bar will be open from 10.30am and again after the game, however space is limited and on a first come first in basis upon production of your MSC Membership Card / Season Ticket (no children under the age of 14 are permitted). However Alcohol will NOT be on sale on the concourses either before the game or at half time.

The MSC would urge all fans attending to be loud, be proud and create the intimidating atmosphere we are capable of. We must not, however, overstep the mark, the eyes of the world are on us and we must be sure the match is remembered for the right reasons. If it goes wrong, expect undesirable constraints for the return fixture and other away matches this season\

9 August 2011 - New Lions Live presenter San Brown introduces herself

Hi, my name is Sam Brown and I am absolutely thrilled to be the new presenter for Lions Live.

My family have been supporting Millwall since the early 1900s and Millwall have undoubtedly been a massive influence on us all. My great-grandad, Alfred John King Carrington, watched his first game against Brighton on the 22nd of October 1910 and his legacy has been passed on. Being the eldest of two daughters, and my dad being a football fanatic, it was plain to see that I would share his interest and passion for the Lions.

My dad, Mark Brown, along with my uncles Len Carrington and David Carrington (DC), would take me to Cold Blow Lane and later The New Den. They would also tell me stories from their away days and the things they would get up to!  I remember my Dad returning home in 1993 with a piece of turf from Cold Blow Lane - he was so pleased to have a piece of Millwall`s hiistory.  I watered that piece of turf for months and was also proud to have it!

I have always felt welcome in the Millwall community and one of my greatest memories was travelling to the old Wembley for the Auto Windshield Final against Wigan. It was a great family day out and I have never seen so many coaches. My nan made a pre-match spread and even tied blue ribbons in her hair. I have listened to so many stories that have been told to me over the years, along with  my own memories, and the feeling I still get from the Millwall Roar is so unique. Being a Millwall Ball Girl in 1998 was a real experience and even though I was stuck below the away fans It was a great day!

I have always been a performer and from a young age dreamt of becoming a commentator. I attended Ravenscourt Theatre School at the age of 12 to study performing Arts and it's where I found my passion for broadcasting. My passion for sports, mixed with my creativity, was an unusual combination and at the Brit School for Performing Arts I really honed in on this.

Since graduating I have worked at many local radio stations and internet radio stations, broadcasting all over the world. When the opportunity for Lions Live came about I knew I had to put myself forward for the position and just hoped that they could see my passion for the Lions. I met with George Lampey and his lovely wife Ann, and I automatically felt at ease and wanted this opportunity more than ever. I am really looking forward to my first season with the Lions and I’m sure it’s going to be action packed.

Come on you Lions!
